Community of Faith

The Portland Promise Community of Faith is a mission-based faith community of the United Methodist Church. In January 2002 three people gathered for prayer and communal reading of scripture. Over time they patiently watched as a Community of Faith emerged. Today this humble group has become the heartbeat of our urban ministry.

Church-based community development is a practical way of reversing negative trends in communities of need. It is also a biblical mandate for the Church. The Church has been called to be an authentic expression of community life as a witness to the love of God and the power of Christ that overcomes racial, economic, and cultural barriers that separate people and destroys community.

The Portland Promise Community of Faith desires to be an expression of a genuine New Testament community– characterized by faith, hope, and love. Our neighborhood is in transition. We continue to face the challenges of economic, social and racial injustice. We are convinced that God has called this humble church into being for such a time as this!

+ Sunday Celebration

The Portland Promise Community of Faith offers a variety of settings for people to gather for celebration, relationship building, reconciliation, study and support. The Sunday Morning Worship Celebration is one of those settings. People who worship with us have said the following about our service:

This ain’t your momma’s church!
When life beats you down you can crawl into this place and dance out!
I feel peace–God’s peace– when I come here.
Ya’ll don’t look like a church?
This is my home! My family!

We gather for worship at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. After a brief time of meeting and greeting we begin the celebration. The service is a casual, inner-active mix of singing, scripture reading, encouragment and prayer for one-another and our neighbors, and challenging one another to discover creative ways to help make God’s dream for our neighborhood a reality.

+ Discipleship Groups

Our hope is that people who journey with us will discover who they are in Christ and experience in living color God’s dream for their life. We believe these discoveries are best uncovered though intentional relationships with other people in small groups. Therefore, a variety of opportunities for study and fellowship are provided by the Portland Promise Community of Faith.

Adult Bible Studies

Adult Bible Studies and fellowship groups are provided at the Center and around the neighborhood in different homes. These small groups provide a safe environment for spiritual reflection, discussion and relationship building.

Youth Community

A large part of what we do at PPC involves ministry to youth. We have a unique opportunity to see many of our kids everyday through afterschool program, weekly worship and weekend activities. Being so involved in their lives provides a lot of opportunities for faith experiences. It is through Youth Community, however that we are most intentional about our kids walk’s with Christ.

+ Community Events

Healthy and vibrant communities experience public celebration and joy as a norm – not as an exception to the rule. The Portland Promise Center offers a variety of community events throughout the year to help lift up the expectation and experience of public celebration. Holiday parties, summer lunches in the park, health clinics, block parties, sports and recreation experiences are some of the events we offer every year.
